Former Liberian President has extended official congratulations to , the government, and people of the as the nation prepares to celebrate its historic 250th Independence Anniversary on July 4, 2026, a milestone marking a quarter-millennium since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
In a formal diplomatic message released Wednesday in Paynesville, the former Liberian leader described the occasion as an “exceptional moment” in the history of one of the world’s oldest democracies.
“I have the great pleasure to extend warm felicitations to you, and through you, to the Government and friendly People of the United States of America, on the exceptional occasion of the 250th Independence Anniversary of your great country,” Weah stated in his message addressed to President Trump.
The anniversary, often referred to as America’s Semiquincentennial, comes at a time when the United States remains one of the world’s most influential political and economic powers.
With a population of over 340 million people, a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeding US$29 trillion, and accounting for nearly 24 percent of global economic output, the United States continues to shape international trade, diplomacy, and security architecture.
Weah’s message reflects the longstanding historical ties between Liberia and the United States relations dating back to the early 19th century when freed African-Americans, under the auspices of the American Colonization Society, established Liberia in 1822.
Liberia later declared independence in 1847, becoming Africa’s first republic, heavily influenced by American democratic values, governance structures, and constitutional frameworks.
Diplomatic observers note that the bond between both nations remains one of the oldest bilateral relationships on the African continent.
The United States has consistently been one of Liberia’s major development partners, contributing billions of dollars in aid over decades, including post-war reconstruction, health, governance, and infrastructure development.
During his presidency from 2018 to 2024, Weah maintained strong diplomatic engagement with Washington, emphasizing cooperation in trade, education, and security.
His latest message is seen as a reaffirmation of Liberia’s enduring friendship with the American people.
Former President Weah further wished the United States continued peace, stability, and prosperity as it marks what many historians consider one of the most significant anniversaries in modern democratic history.
He concluded by extending personal goodwill to President Trump, expressing hopes for his “continued wisdom” as he leads the nation.
The July 4, 2026 celebration is expected to draw millions across the United States and abroad, with nationwide parades, commemorative events, military displays, and historical exhibitions marking 250 years of American independence, a journey that transformed the nation into a global superpower and a symbol of democratic resilience.
