Veteran Liberian journalist Jonathan Paye-Layleh has issued a potent “warning and advice” to the Liberian government, emphasizing the urgent need for a more robust fight against corruption.
speaking through his official Facebook page , Paye-Layleh’s comments underscored a dire prediction if accountability remains elusive.
“We need to put the feet of the government to fire to seriously fight corruption by getting people to account for their actions,” Paye-Layleh stated emphatically.
He warned of grave consequences should the current trajectory continue: “If we don’t, I’m afraid, economic criminals will, in the not-too-distant future, hijack this country and we will be slaves to them.”
Paye-Layleh painted a vivid picture of a future Liberia dominated by those who have amassed illicit wealth.
He cautioned that these “economic criminals” would leverage their stolen resources to exert undue influence and control.
“It’s only they who, through their stolen wealth, will be able to open farms, give scholarships, and buy yellow machines for personal interventions to impress our people,” he elaborated.
The veteran journalist further stressed the long-term implications of such a scenario, asserting that these individuals “could stay in charge forever.”
He concluded his remarks with a rallying call for immediate action, declaring, “The time to act is now.
Paye-Layleh’s strong words serve as a significant challenge to the government to intensify its efforts in prosecuting corruption and ensuring accountability for those who exploit public resources for personal gain.
