A prominent son of Grand Gedeh County and ECOWAS Diplomat, Chief Dr. William Deiyan Towah has praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for initiating state-sponsored reburials for the late President Samuel Kanyon Doe and former First Lady Madam Nancy Bohn Doe, a move he described as a “noble national cause.”
In a press statement released, Dr. Towah said the President’s action stands as a significant step toward genuine reconciliation, national unity, peace, and development in a country still grappling with the shadows of its past.
“President Boakai has shattered the cycle of indifference,” Dr. Towah declared, noting that past administrations failed to act on critical historical matters.
He emphasized that this decision reflects a responsive leadership style, one that listens to the people and acts in the interest of national healing.
He hailed the President’s willingness to acknowledge the legacy of the late President Doe, who led Liberia for a decade and, despite controversies, made notable contributions to national development and democratic transition.
“By honoring both President Doe and the recently deceased First Lady Nancy Bohn Doe, President Boakai has raised the standard for national leadership,” he said. “It’s a demonstration of respect for history, service, and the sacrifices of those who shaped our nation’s trajectory.”
The Grand Gedeh-born diplomat added that such acts of remembrance should inspire current public servants to embrace values of patriotism, diligence, and unwavering commitment to national progress.
In addition to honoring the Does, Dr. Towah commended President Boakai for planning a similar reburial for former President Dr. William R. Tolbert Jr., who was killed during the 1980 coup d’état. He said these efforts represent “necessary steps” toward national closure and healing from decades of trauma.
“These reburials are not just ceremonial; they are symbolic gestures of national atonement,” he stated. “They help us reckon with our past and chart a new course for our collective future.”
Dr. Towah concluded his remarks by calling on all Liberians, especially citizens of Grand Gedeh County, to rally behind President Boakai’s reconciliation efforts.
“Let us embrace this opportunity to unite behind a shared vision for a better Liberia,” he urged.
