The Government of Liberia, through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), has announced plans to celebrate World Fisheries Day 2025 with a series of activities aimed at promoting sustainable fishing and recognizing the contributions of Liberia’s fishing communities.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing in Monrovia, NaFAA Director-General J. Cyrus Saygbe said the celebration will honor fishmongers and fishermen across the country for their vital roles in food security, employment creation, and economic growth.
This year’s celebration will be held under the theme: “Sustaining Fisheries, Securing Livelihoods.”
According to Director-General Saygbe, the week-long observance will begin on November 15 in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, with sporting events and community engagements, including awareness programs on sustainable fishing practices.
Activities will continue on November 17 in Monrovia with an inter-university debate and career day at the University of Liberia’s main campus.
The event will bring together students to discuss topics such as marine conservation, fisheries governance, and youth participation in the blue economy.
The European Union (EU) is serving as the major sponsor of this year’s celebration, reaffirming its continued partnership and support for Liberia’s fisheries sector.
Saygbe disclosed that the official national celebration will take place on November 21, 2025, in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, and will bring together government officials, development partners, and stakeholders from across the country.
He emphasized that NaFAA, under his leadership, has worked to restore donor confidence and strengthen accountability within the institution, resulting in renewed partnerships and increased international support.
“We have made tremendous progress in strengthening accountability and rebuilding relationships with our development partners.
The celebration of World Fisheries Day provides another opportunity to reflect on our progress and reaffirm our commitment to sustainable fisheries management,” Director-General Saygbe stated.
World Fisheries Day is observed globally every November 21 to highlight the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and the sustainable management of fisheries resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
