The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has praised Liberia’s ongoing efforts to establish a War and Economic Crimes Court, recognizing it as a key step toward achieving justice, accountability, and long-term peace in the country.
During a high-level meeting in Monrovia, ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, Josephine Nkrumah, commended the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Courts (OEWECC) for its leadership and commitment to transitional justice.
She lauded the work of OEWECC Executive Director, Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, for the progress made toward setting up both the War and Economic Crimes Court and the Anti-Corruption Courts.
Ambassador Nkrumah described these developments as not only critical to Liberia’s national healing process but also vital for regional peace and security.
“The establishment of these courts is not only a national priority but also a regional imperative for peace and stability,” she said.
Reaffirming ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s transitional justice initiatives, the ambassador pledged continued technical assistance and cooperation.
She also encouraged OWECC-L to utilize ECOWAS Radio as a platform to enhance public engagement and awareness about its work, particularly to support its inclusive and participatory approach.
During the visit, Ambassador Nkrumah interacted with interns at OWECC-L, urging them to take full advantage of the opportunity to contribute to Liberia’s justice process.
She noted that their experience at the Office would play a significant role in preparing the next generation of transitional justice practitioners.
As for Dr. Barbu, he expressed gratitude for ECOWAS’s support, stating that the endorsement strengthens his office’s resolve to rebuild public trust and deliver long-awaited justice to the Liberian people.
“We are honored to have ECOWAS as a strategic partner in this journey,” said Dr. Barbu, adding that the collaboration marks a significant step toward establishing justice mechanisms that promote truth, accountability, and national unity in Liberia.
