On August 21, 2025, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Liberia hosted an evaluation workshop in Voinjama City, Lofa County, in which stakeholders gathered to review the progress of ongoing projects in the region.
Charles K. Marshall, the Program Director of YMCA Liberia, highlighted that the workshop was aimed at assessing the learning outcomes from various initiatives implemented over the past two years.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a commitment to development and peace in Liberia, noting that while some projects are nearing completion, the need for sustained efforts in promoting peace remains critical.
Marshall remarked on the importance of collaboration with partners and stressed the necessity for increased community awareness through schools, organizations, and institutions.
He also pointed out the YMCA’s work with the Ministry of Justice, particularly the Liberian Immigration Service (LIS), to address pressing issues affecting citizens across the country.
The workshop identified several key challenges impacting local communities, including:
Abuse of Students. Reports of mistreatment of students in various institutions were highlighted as a significant concern.
Sex for Grades. The pervasive issue whereby some students are coerced into exchanging sexual favors for academic grades was discussed, indicating a need for urgent intervention.
Lack of Parental Involvement. The limited attendance of Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) at school meetings was noted, pointing to a gap in parental engagement in educational matters.
Rising Drug Issues. The alarming increase in drug use among youth and its ramifications on society was acknowledged as a critical area of focus for the YMCA’s programs.
Mr. Marshall reiterated the importance of sustaining projects aimed at alleviating adverse behaviors, such as drug abuse and the exploitation of young girls for academic gain, throughout communities in Liberia.
The workshop served as a platform for stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and commit to actionable solutions for these pressing societal issues.
