April 22, 2025 | Sanniquellie, Nimba County — In a surprising development coming out of today’s Senatorial By-election in Nimba County, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has confirmed that it is using the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Election voter roll—which includes electoral data associated with the late Senator Prince Y. Johnson—despite today’s poll being held to fill the vacancy left by his passing.

Cape 96.6 FM/TV has learned from the NEC Chairperson’s first official briefing, held earlier at Sanniquellie City Hall, that 307,254 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 262 voting precincts and 736 polling places. Polls opened peacefully at 8:00 AM and are scheduled to close at 6:00 PM.

However, what is raising eyebrows across the county is the use of electoral records that still reflect the now-vacant seat of Senator Prince Y. Johnson. His inclusion in today’s by-election database has sparked concern from some observers and political actors, even as voting continues.

NEC Chairperson acknowledged several logistical hitches but assured the public that voting remains peaceful. Incidents such as locked school buildings, polling location changes due to renovations or security agency occupation, and isolated tensions among party agents have all been swiftly addressed by NEC teams and security personnel.

Despite the challenges, NEC maintains that the process remains credible and transparent, and has encouraged voters to peacefully participate in shaping the next chapter of representation for Nimba County.

The Commission also expressed gratitude to the Government of Liberia for funding the by-election and to international partners for their support. NEC officials say they remain committed to delivering a fair and successful electoral outcome.

Cape 96.6 FM/TV will continue to monitor developments and bring you updates as they unfold throughout the day.
