In a an effort of buttressing national government in improving the livelihoods of citizens and productivity in Liberia’s fisheries sector, Maryland County Electoral District #1 Representative Mike Jurry, has donated assorted fishing equipment and financial support to local fishermen in New Kru Town, Harper.
The donation forms part of his ongoing commitment to empowering fishing communities and improving the fisheries sector across his district.
The presentation ceremony brought together fishermen and community representatives from Pinicess, Grand Cess, Sass Town, and the Glebo Community, all gathered to receive the support package from the lawmaker.
Rep. Jurry who is also the Chair on Ways, Means and Finance at the House of Representatives donated fishing lines and hooks of various sizes, essential tools that play a critical role in the daily activities of fishermen whose livelihoods depend largely on fishing.
Making the presentation, Rep. Jurry indicated the strategic importance of fishermen to food security and economic development in Maryland County and the southeastern region of Liberia.
According to him, fish harvested from the ocean feeds thousands of families and contributes significantly to local markets, stating further that fishermen deserve greater recognition and support for the demanding work they perform under often difficult conditions.
He further maintained that the donation is intended to encourage increased fishing activities, improve productivity, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the fisheries sector within the district.
The lawmaker, in addition to materials donated, also presented LD$100,000 in cash support to the fishermen, describing the gesture as another demonstration of his continued dedication to improving the welfare and working conditions of fishing communities.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the beneficiaries, Rev. Alfred D. Nah, head of the Kru Fishermen, praised Representative Jurry for what he described as timely and impactful support.
He expressed appreciation for the lawmaker’s consistent engagement with local fishermen and said the contribution would significantly improve their operations while inspiring greater productivity across the sector.
Community members described the intervention as a meaningful investment in local economic empowerment and a positive step toward expanding opportunities within Maryland County’s fisheries industry.
