As Liberia continues to grapple with deep-rooted challenges in its education sector, the Executive Director of the Girls Health Alliance, Pauline F. Gartor, is calling on young people across the country to remain steadfast and refuse to surrender their dreams.
In a compelling open letter addressed to “Young People,” the Liberian youth advocate and changemaker outlined the harsh realities confronting students nationwide.
Ms. Gartor cited deteriorating school infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, damaged buildings, and the absence of essential facilities such as libraries and science laboratories as major setbacks to quality learning.
She also highlighted limited admission spaces at public schools and universities, intense academic competition, financial hardship, and systemic barriers that continue to block many bright and determined students from accessing higher education.
According to her, these persistent obstacles have left countless young people discouraged and uncertain about their future. However, she stressed that hardship must not be allowed to define destiny.
Drawing from her own lived experience, Gartor reflected on the struggles of growing up in humble circumstances, worrying about school fees, and facing doubts about her potential.
She emphasized that belief in oneself, coupled with consistency and resilience, can transform even the most difficult beginnings into stories of success.“If you are a young person in this situation, don’t quit,” she wrote.
“Fight for opportunities. Stay consistent. Keep showing up even when it’s slow, even when it’s dark.”She urged young people to start small if necessary, to hustle when required, and to survive tough seasons without abandoning their aspirations.
Many of today’s successful leaders, she noted, began their journeys under similar conditions.Concluding her message, Gartor called for faith, determination, and unwavering hope, reminding Liberia’s youth that their current circumstances are only temporary and not their final destination.
A longstanding advocate for youth empowerment, Pauline Gartor continues to use her platform to inspire and uplift young people.
As national efforts to reform and strengthen the education system move forward, her voice stands as a powerful reminder that resilience, courage, and belief remain essential tools for overcoming adversity.
