President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has nominated Mr. J. Cyrus Saygbe, Sr. as Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

The nomination, announced from the Executive Mansion on Saturday, follows Mr. Saygbe’s months-long service as Acting Director General, a role he assumed in May 2025 after the suspension of former Director General Ms. Emma Metieh Glasco.

During his tenure as acting head of NaFAA, Mr. Saygbe has overseen several initiatives aimed at strengthening governance within Liberia’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

These efforts include promoting sustainable fishing practices, improving regulatory compliance, and enhancing institutional coordination to protect Liberia’s aquatic resources.

President Boakai, in announcing the nomination, expressed confidence in Saygbe’s leadership and administrative experience, stating that his confirmation would help consolidate progress made in the sector and further contribute to national economic development.

“The fisheries and aquaculture sector remains a vital pillar of Liberia’s economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of citizens and contributing to food security,” the President noted, while emphasizing the need for strong leadership to ensure sustainability and accountability.

The President also called on stakeholders, including fishing communities, private operators, and development partners, to support Mr. Saygbe’s leadership upon confirmation, as the government continues to prioritize sustainable resource management and sectoral growth.

NaFAA plays a critical role in regulating fisheries activities, promoting aquaculture development, and safeguarding Liberia’s marine and inland water resources in line with national laws and international commitments.

Mr. Saygbe’s nomination now awaits scrutiny and confirmation by the Liberian Senate, in accordance with constitutional procedures.
