Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Guinea following a devastating landslide in Conakry that reportedly claimed the lives of at least 30 people and left six others critically injured.
The former Liberian leader conveyed his condolences in a letter addressed to Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and communities affected by the disaster.
According to information cited in the condolence message, the landslide struck shortly after 2:00 a.m. GMT on Sunday, August 24, in the Dar es Salem community of Conakry, causing significant loss of life, critical injuries and the destruction of several homes.
Weah described the incident as a devastating tragedy and extended his sympathy to President Doumbouya, members of his government and the wider Guinean population, with particular emphasis on families who lost loved ones or were directly affected by the disaster.
The former president also offered prayers for those injured, wishing them a speedy and complete recovery.
“It is my fervent prayer and hope that you, your Government and the people of the Republic of Guinea, including, but not limited to the bereaved and affected families, in your usual resilience, will take solace in God The Almighty, as you go through this challenging national period of your existence,” Weah said.
He further expressed confidence in the resilience of the Guinean people, saying the country would overcome the tragedy with renewed strength and hope.
Weah said he believed President Doumbouya and his administration would continue their efforts to advance Guinea’s development and build a better future for its citizens despite the difficult circumstances created by the disaster.
The condolence message underscores the longstanding ties between Liberia and Guinea, two neighboring West African countries linked by geography, history, regional cooperation and close people-to-people relations.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the tragedy has drawn attention to the vulnerability of communities exposed to landslides and other hazards, particularly in densely populated areas where homes and infrastructure may be at risk.
Former President Weah concluded his message by reiterating his solidarity with the Guinean nation and offering prayers for the victims, the injured and all families affected by the disaster.
