A new chapter in diaspora media leadership has begun as Cyrus Joel McGee, Chief Executive Officer of KMTV-USA, has been unanimously elected President of the Midwest Chapter of the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA).

The election, held during the chapter’s first official meeting of 2026 in Minneapolis, marks a significant leadership transition within one of the organization’s most influential regional bodies.

ALJA serves as the principal umbrella organization representing both former and active Liberian journalists residing across the United States, playing a vital role in shaping diaspora media engagement and professional collaboration.

A Strategic Leadership Transition

McGee’s emergence as president follows the elevation of former Midwest Chapter President, Success Minor, to the position of National Secretary General within ALJA, a move that necessitated fresh leadership at the regional level.

His unanimous election reflects strong internal consensus and confidence in his leadership, particularly at a time when the Midwest Chapter holds considerable strategic importance within ALJA’s national structure.

In his acceptance remarks, McGee underscored the chapter’s unique position within the organization’s hierarchy, noting that it currently hosts key national figures, including the National President, Secretary General, and Board Chairman.

“Our chapter is the focal point of the national leadership, and we must remain vigilant,” McGee stated, signaling a leadership approach centered on responsibility, coordination, and institutional strength.

National Leadership Endorses New President

ALJA National President Joey Kennedy praised the Midwest Chapter for what he described as a “smooth and orderly transition,” emphasizing the importance of continuity and cohesion within diaspora journalism networks.

Kennedy urged the new leadership to prioritize unity, broaden the organization’s membership base, and actively re-engage journalists who have become inactive in recent years.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of ALJA’s national leadership and governing board to support the Midwest Chapter’s initiatives, highlighting the region’s pivotal role in advancing the organization’s broader mission.

Outgoing Leadership Calls for Continuity

Outgoing Acting President Vivian Naeyamah Cooper, who now assumes the role of Vice President of the Midwest Chapter, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to lead during the transitional period.

She called on members to rally behind the new administration, stressing the importance of unity and collaboration in sustaining organizational progress.

A Key Pillar in Diaspora Media Development

The ALJA Midwest Chapter has long been regarded as a cornerstone of the organization’s operations in the United States. With a concentration of experienced journalists and media practitioners, the chapter plays a critical role in promoting professional standards, fostering mentorship, and strengthening ties between Liberian media professionals at home and abroad.

McGee’s presidency is expected to usher in renewed efforts to expand outreach, enhance member engagement, and reinforce the chapter’s influence within both ALJA and the wider media landscape.

As diaspora journalism continues to evolve amid digital transformation and shifting global narratives, leadership within organizations like ALJA remains essential.

McGee’s election signals not only continuity but also an opportunity to redefine the role of Liberian journalists in shaping discourse across borders.

With strong backing from national leadership and a clear mandate from members, the Midwest Chapter appears poised to deepen its impact in the months ahead.
