The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, is set to play a prominent role in Liberia’s 179th Independence Anniversary celebrations as Presenter of Citations and Accolades at the 16th Golden Image Awards (GIA) 2026, one of the country’s most prestigious national recognition ceremonies.

The event is scheduled for July 21, 2026, at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Monrovia, and is expected to bring together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, business executives, civil society leaders, traditional authorities, and distinguished guests from across the world.

The Golden Image Awards have become a cornerstone of Liberia’s Independence celebrations, recognizing exceptional individuals, institutions, organizations, and international partners whose contributions have advanced national development, peacebuilding, humanitarian service, education, entrepreneurship, governance, culture, and youth empowerment.

Speaker Koon’s participation highlights the National Legislature’s commitment to promoting excellence, strengthening national unity, and acknowledging citizens whose dedication continues to shape Liberia’s democratic and socio-economic progress.

As Presenter of Citations and Accolades, the House Speaker will officially confer national recognition upon award recipients whose work has inspired patriotism, promoted peace, and contributed significantly to sustainable development both within Liberia and internationally.

Founded in 2010 by Ambassador Juli Endee through the Liberia Crusaders for Peace, and endorsed by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Golden Image Awards were established to celebrate outstanding service while encouraging a culture of excellence and national responsibility.

Over the past 16 years, the awards have honored hundreds of distinguished Liberians and international personalities for achievements spanning public service, diplomacy, healthcare, education, security, arts and culture, humanitarian work, media, and community development.

The initiative has evolved into one of Liberia’s leading platforms for recognizing leadership excellence while promoting reconciliation, patriotism, and cultural diplomacy in the aftermath of the country’s civil conflicts.

Organizers say this year’s edition will reinforce Liberia’s image as a peaceful and investment-friendly nation while showcasing the country’s cultural richness and development aspirations.

Liberia, Africa’s oldest independent republic, will celebrate 179 years of independence on July 26, 2026.

Since the end of its civil war in 2003, the country has made measurable gains in democratic governance, peacebuilding, and macroeconomic stability.

According to international development assessments, Liberia continues to work with global partners to improve infrastructure, education, healthcare, private sector growth, and youth employment while consolidating democratic institutions.

The Golden Image Awards complement these national efforts by recognizing citizens and institutions whose innovations and public service contribute to sustainable national transformation.

Organizers anticipate participation from high-level delegates representing countries across Africa, Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East, reflecting the growing international stature of the awards.

The ceremony is expected to attract ambassadors, development agencies, international organizations, investors, religious leaders, cultural ambassadors, and members of the Liberian diaspora, further positioning the event as a platform for strengthening international partnerships and promoting Liberia’s tourism, culture, and investment opportunities.

Beyond honoring achievement, the awards continue to inspire young Liberians by highlighting stories of resilience, leadership, innovation, and service to humanity.

As Liberia commemorates nearly two centuries of independence, the 2026 Golden Image Awards are expected to reaffirm the country’s enduring commitment to peace, unity, and inclusive national development.

With Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon joining a distinguished lineup of national and international dignitaries, this year’s ceremony promises to celebrate those whose vision, integrity, and dedication continue to shape Liberia’s future while projecting a positive image of the nation on the global stage.
