The President of the United Methodist University (UMU) Alumni Association, Dioh Cox Podee, has called on members of the university’s 21st graduating class to uphold integrity, discipline, and purpose as they transition into the next phase of their lives.

Addressing the 612 graduates, Podee described graduation not as an end, but as a significant turning point into a life of responsibility and self-direction.

“Graduation is often described as an end; in truth, it is a transition, one that quietly moves you from structured learning into the responsibility of shaping your own path,” he said.

He emphasized that the graduates now carry the image and reputation of the university into the broader society, noting that their actions will reflect the institution. “From this day forward, your conduct, your decisions, and your values will, in many ways, speak on behalf of this institution,” Podee stated.

Referencing the university’s motto, he urged graduates to embody its meaning in their daily lives.

“The University’s motto, ‘A Light to the World,’ is not ornamental language. To live as light is to commit yourself to truth, integrity, and usefulness,” he stated.

Podee encouraged the graduates to apply their knowledge with discipline and ethical responsibility, stressing that education must go beyond theory.

“Knowledge, when left unused or misused, holds little value. But knowledge guided by discipline and moral clarity becomes transformative—not only for you, but for the communities you will serve,” he added.

He also cautioned against taking the easy path in moments of difficulty, noting that true character is tested during challenging times. “There will be moments when shortcuts appear attractive, when compromise feels convenient, and when silence seems easier than speaking.

“It is in those moments, not in the comfort of successthat your education will be tested,” Podee warned.

Reflecting on the broader responsibility of the graduates, he reminded them of the collective investment behind their success. “You carry with you the sacrifices of your families, the guidance of your lecturers, and the expectations of a nation,” he said.

Podee, the Alumni president congratulated graduates on their achievement and officially welcome them into the alumni community, urging them to carry their identity with confidence and purpose.
