A suspected case of Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, has been reported at
CB Dunbar Maternity Hospital in Bong County, triggering public health concerns
across the region.
The patient, a female whose identity is being kept confidential, has been
isolated at the hospital for the past three days. She is currently under close
medical observation after exhibiting symptoms consistent with Mpox, a
contagious viral disease.
Confirming the case, the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Moses Beyan, said
a dedicated medical team is monitoring the patient while implementing strict
safety protocols to prevent any potential spread. “We have a dedicated medical
team managing her condition and ensuring all safety protocols are followed,” he
stated.
Laboratory samples have been sent to a specialized facility for testing to
determine whether the case is positive for Mpox or another illness. Dr. Beyan
reassured the public that health authorities at both the county and national
levels are actively involved and prepared to respond appropriately once results
are received.
Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease that can spread from animals to humans and
through close human-to-human contact. Common symptoms include fever, muscle
aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash that may form lesions. While
it resembles smallpox, Mpox is typically less severe. The World Health
Organization officially renamed Monkeypox to Mpox in 2022 to reduce stigma.
In response to the suspected case, local health officials are ramping up
community awareness efforts. Public health messages emphasize vigilance, early
reporting of symptoms, and adherence to preventive hygiene measures, such as
frequent hand washing and wearing face masks in crowded areas.
“We are encouraging residents to stay calm but alert,” said Dr. Beyan.
“Early detection and cooperation from the public are key to managing this
situation effectively.”
Bong County has faced numerous public health challenges in the past, and
community leaders are stepping forward to support the hospital and disseminate
accurate information. Health workers are also mobilizing outreach programs to
educate residents on how Mpox spreads and what to do if symptoms appear.
As the region awaits confirmation from the lab, health officials continue to
monitor the situation closely and urge the public to rely on verified
information from trusted sources.
