President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has departed Liberia for Lagos, Nigeria,
where he will join other West African leaders in celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The commemorative events, scheduled for May 28, will mark five decades of
regional cooperation, integration, and solidarity among the 15 member states of
ECOWAS.

The golden jubilee is expected to draw Heads of State and Government,
regional dignitaries, and representatives from international organizations to
reflect on the bloc’s achievements and renew commitments to shared goals.

Hosted by the Government of Nigeria, the celebrations will include a
symbolic reenactment at the National Institute of International Affairs (NIIA),
the site of the initial discussions that led to ECOWAS’s founding in 1975.

The event is expected to pay homage to the region’s founding vision and reaffirm
its dedication to unity, peace, and sustainable development.

President Boakai is scheduled to take part in key commemorative activities,
including the signing of a symbolic 50th Anniversary Card and a joint
declaration by regional leaders reaffirming their commitment to ECOWAS’s
mission.

He will also attend the main anniversary ceremony at EKO Hotel and a
high-level roundtable conference at the NIIA, focusing on strategies for
regional development.

The Liberian leader is accompanied by a small delegation comprising Deputy
Foreign Minister Deweh Gray, retired Major General Daniel D. Ziankahn, who
serves as Military Advisor to the President, and National Security Advisor
Atty. Samuel Koffi Woods II.

Also accompanying him are members of the
presidential communications, protocol, and security teams.

According to the Executive Mansion, Minister of State for Presidential
Affairs, Hon. Sylvester Grigsby, will oversee cabinet matters in consultation
with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and the President himself via
telephone.

President Boakai and his delegation are expected to return to Liberia on
Thursday, May 29, following the conclusion of the anniversary activities.

The ECOWAS golden jubilee comes at a pivotal moment for the region, as
member states seek to address challenges ranging from political instability and
security threats to economic integration and climate change.

Liberia’s active
participation underscores its commitment to fostering regional peace and
collaboration.
