The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has announced a major public hearing into the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC)’s application for a 20-megawatt (MW) solar generation license.

This step is toward reshaping Liberia’s energy future and is expected to take place on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the David A. Day Memorial Lutheran Church, in line with Section 13.7 of the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia and the Commission’s Administrative Procedure Regulations of September 2020.

At the center of the process is LEC’s proposal to develop, own, and operate a utility-scale solar facility at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant.

The state-owned utility says the project is intended to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce overreliance on existing generation sources, and improve overall electricity reliability.

This propose solar initiative is view as a potentially transformative addition to Liberia’s power sector, particularly as the country continues to face persistent supply challenges and growing demand for electricity.

LERC is calling on stakeholders, affected communities, and the wider public to participate in the hearing, describing it as a key platform for transparency and citizen engagement in national energy planning.

“This public hearing reflects our commitment to transparency and inclusive decision-making in Liberia’s energy sector. The proposed solar project represents a critical step toward a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply for our country,” said Board Chairman Claude J. Katta.
