More than a decade after Liberia’s fragile healthcare system was exposed by the deadly Ebola outbreak, the South-Eastern region has received a major lifeline with the dedication of a US$15 million state-of-the-art hospital in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

The modern facility, constructed through a partnership between the Governments of Liberia and Germany and implemented by Welt-HungerHilfe (WHH), is being hailed as one of the most significant health investments in the South-East in recent years.

For decades, residents of Grand Gedeh and neighboring counties have endured long, costly, and sometimes life-threatening journeys to access advanced medical care.

The new hospital is expected to dramatically reduce maternal and infant mortality, strengthen emergency response, and improve overall health outcomes in the region.

The 160-bed hospital is fully equipped with a laboratory, emergency department, operating theatre, pharmacy, neonatal unit, maternity ward, and isolation facilities, capabilities that were previously unavailable or extremely limited in the area. Supporting infrastructure such as a water tower, power generation systems, incinerator, morgue, and staff facilities ensures uninterrupted service delivery.

Speaking during the dedication ceremony on January 22, 2026, German Ambassador Dr. Jakob Haselhuber described the hospital as a tangible outcome of lessons learned from the Ebola crisis.

He noted that the project emerged from health sector negotiations signed in 2015, aimed at strengthening Liberia’s resilience against future public health emergencies.

Liberia’s Vice President, Jeremiah Kpang Koung, welcomed the facility as a major step toward addressing regional health inequalities.

He praised Germany’s long-standing partnership with Liberia and said the hospital would save lives by bringing quality healthcare closer to the people.

“This hospital removes a major burden from families who have had to travel long distances in search of treatment,” the Vice President said, describing the project as a symbol of shared commitment to human development.

Health Minister Dr. Louis Kpoto characterized the facility as a turning point for healthcare delivery in the South-East, stressing that improved infrastructure is essential to achieving universal health coverage.

She thanked the German Government and WHH for their sustained support and reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral health cooperation.

The project was funded by KfW Development Bank and implemented by WHH, which has supported similar health and development initiatives in Sinoe and River Gee counties.

As doors open to patients in Zwedru, the new hospital stands not only as a modern structure, but as a symbol of recovery, resilience, and renewed hope for thousands of Liberians who for years have faced healthcare challenges with limited options.
