The Liberia CSOs Coalition on Migration has expressed grave concern over recent developments at the Sorlumba Port of Entry in Lofa County, where reported actions by Guinean soldiers have heightened tensions along the Liberia–Guinea border.

In a statement issued Monday, the coalition said its attention was drawn to reports of Guinean troops allegedly crossing into Liberian territory along the Makona River and hoisting their national flag on land believed to be within Liberia’s borders.

The group described the incident as a serious threat to Liberia’s territorial integrity and national security.

According to the coalition, the situation has triggered the displacement of thousands of residents in Sorlumba and surrounding communities.

Many of those affected are now homeless and struggling to secure basic necessities. The group noted that vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, children, pregnant women, students, and the elderly, have been disproportionately impacted, losing homes, farms, livestock, and other belongings.

The coalition is urging both the Liberian and Guinean governments to adhere to the African Union’s migration protocols, particularly the 2018 framework aimed at protecting migrants’ rights and promoting regional integration.

It emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue to resolve the border dispute and prevent further displacement, warning that more than 10,000 residents across 13 towns and villages remain at risk.

The statement also highlighted concerns over recent demolitions in parts of Montserrado County, carried out by the Liberia National Police under court eviction orders.

The coalition has further criticized what it termed a lack of government intervention, describing the evictions as inhumane and detrimental to already vulnerable communities, many of whom have been left without shelter or access to education.

Additionally, the coalition called on authorities in Ghana to investigate the reported mob killing of a Liberian national, urging justice and accountability.

The statement was signed by Sam M. Nimely, Focal Person of the coalition, which comprises civil society organizations working to promote safe and dignified migration through advocacy, research, and community engagement.
