The Government of Liberia has strongly rejected allegations linking it to the recent fire incident at the headquarters of Solidarity for Trust and A New Day (STAND).
Speaking Thursday at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah dismissed claims that the Unity Party-led administration orchestrated, supported, or had any interest in an attack on the political movement.
Minister Piah stressed that the government remains fully engaged with governance and national development priorities and would not undertake actions that threaten peace or target any political institution or individual.
He described accusations made by STAND leader Mulbah Morlu as “baseless and misleading,” stating that the statements amount to “empty political rhetoric without substance,” intended to misinform the public rather than contribute to constructive national dialogue.
The Minister further criticized the STAND leadership for failing to present tangible national policy proposals, instead issuing what he referred to as “unfounded and inflammatory statements” that do little to advance Liberia’s progress.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the preservation of a peaceful democratic environment, Minister Piah urged political actors to engage responsibly and refrain from spreading misinformation that could undermine national stability.
In a related development, Minister Piah took aim at officials of the former Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government, accusing some of showing irritation over Liberia’s improved standing in its effort to qualify for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact Grant.
He expressed disappointment that certain individuals, particularly figures from the previous administration, appear to be speaking against the country’s strengthened prospects for securing the compact.
According to the Minister, the CDC-led government repeatedly failed to meet key MCC scorecard indicators, while the current Unity Party administration is implementing reforms that enhance Liberia’s chances.
Amidst ongoing political tensions, Minister Piah reaffirmed that the government remains committed to reforms aimed at restoring public confidence, improving governance, and bolstering Liberia’s prospects for accessing the MCC Compact to support national development.
