The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia has confirmed that Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) is responsible for the recent chemical contamination that led to mass fish deaths in Marvoe Creek.
The revelation comes after a thorough investigation carried out in coordination with Joint Security forces.EPA officials traced the contamination to a water diversion structure at the base of BMMC’s underground mining operations.
Laboratory tests identified cypermethrin as the chemical responsible for the environmental incident.During the probe, investigators discovered multiple burial sites along Marvoe Creek containing large quantities of dead fish.
BMMC initially denied knowledge of these burials, but further evidence revealed that company personnel conducted them to prevent residents from consuming contaminated fish.
The EPA expressed deep concern over delayed reporting and lack of transparency, citing significant environmental and public health risks. The Agency is actively investigating the contamination’s source, handling, and impact and will pursue appropriate legal, regulatory, and administrative actions.
Residents are urged to avoid using water from Marvoe Creek or consuming any aquatic species from affected areas.
Environmental audits and compliance inspections continue across key concession areas, including BMMC, China Union, and Sethi Brothers Incorporated, with findings to be publicly released.
