President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has officially broken ground for the construction of a major 86-kilometer asphalt highway corridor linking Mendicorma in Foya District to Voinjama City, a landmark infrastructure project expected to reshape transportation, regional trade, and economic activity in northern Liberia.
The groundbreaking ceremony, signals one of the most ambitious road infrastructure undertakings under President Boakai’s administration and forms part of Liberia’s broader national development agenda aimed at strengthening connectivity, stimulating commerce, and improving access to essential services.
Positioned in one of Liberia’s most strategic border regions, the highway is expected to enhance movement between communities near the frontiers of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, three nations linked through the Mano River Union, a regional bloc created to promote economic cooperation, peacebuilding, and cross-border development.
“It Is Liberia That Matters Most”
Addressing citizens, local authorities, diplomats, and regional stakeholders at the ceremony, President Boakai emphasized national unity and development over political division, declaring that infrastructure expansion remains central to the government’s strategy for long-term economic transformation.
“To those fighting, it is Liberia that matters most,” President Boakai said, urging Liberians to place national development above political polarization.
He stressed that the road project would not only serve residents of Lofa County but also facilitate movement for communities with deeply interconnected ethnic, cultural, and commercial ties across borders.
“Where this project is located, it will serve not just the people of Lofa,” the Liberian leader stated, pointing to the region’s longstanding interwoven identities and economic relationships.
President Boakai further urged citizens to embrace collective responsibility for national development.
“There is nowhere else called Liberia that we know as ours,” he remarked, calling on citizens to work together to uplift the nation and expand opportunities for younger and future generations.
Strategic Infrastructure With Regional Significance
The 86-kilometer Mendicorma–Voinjama corridor is expected to reduce travel time, improve transportation efficiency, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and increase access to markets for farmers and traders in Lofa County, one of Liberia’s agriculturally rich regions.
Road infrastructure remains a major challenge in Liberia, where limited paved-road networks have historically slowed commerce, constrained rural access to education and healthcare, and increased transportation costs, especially during the rainy season.
According to historical infrastructure assessments, large portions of Liberia’s road network remain vulnerable to seasonal deterioration, making highway expansion a priority for economic diversification and national integration.
Analysts say improved road access could strengthen trade routes linking Liberia to neighboring Sierra Leone and Guinea, helping to boost regional commerce in agricultural products, consumer goods, and cross-border enterprise.
The highway’s location near the tri-border region gives it added strategic significance for the Mano River Union, whose member states have increasingly emphasized transport connectivity as a cornerstone of regional economic integration.
Praise for Public Works Ministry’s Turnaround
During his remarks, President Boakai commended the Ministry of Public Works for what he described as renewed commitment and institutional determination in driving national infrastructure delivery.
The President acknowledged that the ministry had initially faced hesitation and operational lapses but praised what he termed a dramatic turnaround in execution and performance.
He specifically applauded Public Works Minister Lafayette Roland Giddings and his team, urging them to sustain momentum and ensure the highway project is completed effectively and on schedule.
The Liberian leader said the successful implementation of the project would stand as evidence of government accountability and commitment to improving living conditions nationwide.
Strengthening Regional Diplomacy
President Boakai also used the occasion to recognize the role of regional partnerships in supporting Liberia’s development ambitions.
He praised Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio for ongoing cooperation aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and regional integration between neighboring states.
The collaboration, according to officials, reflects broader efforts among Mano River Union countries to deepen economic partnerships, improve infrastructure connectivity, and reinforce political cooperation across borders.
Leaders Hail Project as Historic
The event drew senior government officials, lawmakers, diplomats, traditional leaders, development stakeholders, and representatives of the private sector, many describing the initiative as historic for both Lofa County and Liberia at large.
Among those delivering statements of support were Francis Sakila Nyumalin, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Thomas P. Fallah, Lofa Legislative Caucus Chairman Joseph K. Jallah, representatives of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic mission, and private sector executives including Alimou Sami Barrie, whose company is expected to play a leading role in construction activities.
Government officials and regional partners described the highway project as a transformative investment expected to unlock economic opportunities, expand market access, and deepen regional cooperation.
As construction begins, many residents and stakeholders see the Mendicorma–Voinjama corridor as more than a road project but a potential gateway to economic mobility, regional integration, and a stronger future for northern Liberia.
