A prominent son of Grand Cape Mount County, Atty. Al-Varney Rogers has sharply opposed Bea Mountain Mining Company over its reported plan to construct a stadium in Bong County, accusing the mining firm of sidelining the very communities that host and sustain its operations.
“This is not just about a stadium,” he emphasized. “It is about respect, fairness, and ensuring that development is not disconnected from sacrifice.”
Atty. Rogers described the decision as a clear failure of corporate responsibility, arguing that Bea Mountain has for years extracted substantial mineral resources from Grand Cape Mount County while leaving behind environmental damage and limited tangible development for affected communities.
“While we are not opposed to development in Bong County, it is unacceptable that a company operating almost exclusively in Grand Cape Mount would prioritize major infrastructure projects elsewhere,” he said.
“Our people continue to make sacrifices, yet see little meaningful investment in return.”He further noted that Bea Mountain’s football team regularly uses the Momo Tarweh Stadium in Grand Cape Mount, an aging and poorly equipped facility, without any visible effort by the company to rehabilitate or modernize it.
Atty. Rogers on his official Facebook page expressed that the situation underscores what he called a pattern of neglect toward local youth, sports development, and community welfare.
He stressed that mining companies operating in Liberia have a moral and social obligation to prioritize host communities, particularly those bearing the environmental and social costs of extraction.
Atty. Rogers has warned that continued neglect could deepen resentment and erode trust between communities and concessionaires.
He disclosed that local stakeholders have intended to engage Bea Mountain Mining Company in the coming days to demand clarity on its development priorities and push for investments that directly benefit Grand Cape Mount County.
Bea Mountain Mining Company had not responded to the allegations as of the time of publication.
