The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in partnership with Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, officially launched the rehabilitation of the Sanniquellie Airstrip on Wednesday, June 11.
The crucial project aims to significantly improve regional air connectivity, bolster humanitarian efforts, and stimulate economic development in Nimba County.
A groundbreaking ceremony graced by local government officials, community stakeholders, and representatives from both Samaritan’s Purse and the LAA in the Sanniquellie marked the commencement of the $125,000 initiative, which is expected to be completed within six months.
As part of the project, The local construction firm Jungle Water Group of Investment will carry out the rehabilitation work.
Mark Kuiah, Deputy Managing Director for Operations at the Liberia Airport Authority, emphasized the airstrip’s dual importance for humanitarian outreach and regional development.
“This initiative aligns with our national aviation development agenda,” he stated.
“We extend our gratitude to Samaritan’s Purse for their continued support and active involvement in Liberia’s aviation sector.”, he added.
Kuiah also urged local authorities to prioritize public awareness of safety protocols, given that aviation is still relatively new to the area.
He affirmed the LAA’s commitment to ensuring the airstrip meets international aviation standards.
A representative from Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, a globally recognized Christian humanitarian organization, highlighted the airstrip’s strategic role in facilitating rapid relief and support.
“Aviation brings speed. When help is needed quickly, we can now respond effectively through this airstrip,” the representative affirmed. “This is not just infrastructure; it’s a channel for both service and ministry.”
Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono, speaking on behalf of the local government, commended the collaborative efforts of the LAA and Samaritan’s Purse.
She recalled the challenges that necessitated the project and underscored the transformative impact it is expected to have on the region.
Community members have expressed optimism about the development, anticipating improved access to goods and services, economic stimulation, and increased tourism potential within Nimba County.
