In a milestone for local governance, Grand Gedeh County on Tuesday, May 20,
2025, conducted its first official election for township commissioner
leadership, ushering in a new era of decentralization and community
representation.
Held at the County Administrative Building under the oversight of
Superintendent Alex Grant, the election brought together 20 township
commissioners from across the county to democratically elect a leadership team
in line with the mandates of Liberia’s Local Government Act.
The process was organized by Mr. Alphonso Gbayeh, Chairman of the Ad-Hoc
Election Commission, who clarified the eligibility criteria: only commissioners
with a valid “green letter” of appointment from the President, verified by the
Ministry of Internal Affairs, were qualified to run. However, acting
commissioners were permitted to vote but not contest.
Following declarations of intent and a transparent voting exercise, Hon. Sam
Boduo was elected as the first Chairperson of Township Commissioners for Grand
Gedeh County.
In his inaugural remarks, Mr. Boduo expressed appreciation for the
confidence shown in him and called for unity among township leaders.
“I’m honored by the trust my fellow commissioners have placed in me. My
priority now is to foster collaboration so we can collectively plan and drive
the development of our townships,” he said.
Joining Boduo on the leadership team are Andrew Gaye, elected First Vice
Chairperson, and Felecia Dowaity, elected Second Vice Chairperson.
Mr. Gaye expressed optimism, noting the leadership platform empowers
commissioners to actively shape local development.
“Being elected means we’re now fully part of the system,” he said. “It gives
us a voice to advocate for support and initiate projects that truly matter to
our people.”
Ms. Dowaity, praised for her collaborative spirit, pledged to promote
service, unity, and the interests of all townships.
This historic election marks the first time township commissioners in Grand
Gedeh have democratically chosen their own leadership. Observers hailed the
occasion as a milestone in Liberia’s decentralization process and a vital step
toward improved local governance.
The newly elected team is expected to begin immediate consultations with
township stakeholders, focusing on community needs assessments and
strengthening partnerships with national authorities, including the Ministry of
Internal Affairs.
