Former Rwandan Foreign Minister Dr. Charles Murigande has outlined scores of meaningful recommendations intended to move Liberia forward as a nation and its people.
Using the Rwandan story to encourage Liberians to emulate their good example, Dr. Murigande called on Liberians to be one people with share destiny.
Rwanda he said as part of their forward march process understood that exclusion, corruption and impunity have been the root of their tragedy.
According to him, rebuilding requires a governance system based on transparency, accountability, inclusivity and efficient service to citizens something he encouraged the current administration to implement.
Speaking more about the Rwandan story, he disclosed that following their crisis, Rwandan think big and refused to be victims of their past.
Graduating from their dark Rwandan leaders he stated took several steps including the decentralization of power , corruption was fought relentlessly, while public trust institutions was restored.
” If Rwandan can rise from Genocide to global respect, Liberia can do same especially with its proud history, rich resources, resilient people and vibrant Diaspora who can together work to help build a future of unity and prosperity “, he added.
He urged the Liberian government to combine accountability with reconciliation in order to move the Country forward.
The Rwandan educator stressed that it is time for Liberians to replace national identity over ethnic identity, confront the past honestly stating that healing can not rest on denial as such truth must be named however, painful.
He wants national unity to be seen as the cornerstone of nation good as such warned the people to rise above ethnic and regional divide.
Speaking to national leaders, Dr. Murigande challenged the government to pursue accountable governance adding that trustful institutions are essential for peace and stability.
” Invest in reconciliation policies and implementation mechanism, create space where truth can be told, forgiveness offered and community secured”, he noted.
Mr. Murigande at the same rally the government and its people to think big about the future and refused to allow the past conflict and poverty to define them.
Moreover, he called on Diaspora Liberians to return home, “Liberia needs you now so go home , leave your comfort behind and go back to rebuild Liberia”, he added.
Dr. Murigande encouraged them to serve as probono ambassadors , engaged into meaningful ventures as well as investment in tourism, technology transfer among others in order to rebuild Liberia.
He spoke during the 2025, Liberia annual Diaspora Conference held in Washington DC, the United States of America.
