The groundbreaking ceremony for the Willie Knuckles Sports Pitch has been widely welcomed by football stakeholders as a landmark development for grassroots sports and community football in Liberia.

Speaking to members of the media at the event, Ivan Brown, President of the Alpha Oldtimer Sports Association and an Executive Committee Member of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), described the occasion as both historic and deeply inspiring.

Brown expressed immense excitement and satisfaction, noting that the ceremony marked the transition of the project from vision to reality.

According to him, the launch of construction represents a critical step forward in efforts to revitalize community-based sports and strengthen participation at the grassroots level.

“This is truly a joyful moment for all of us,” Brown said.

“The groundbreaking of the Willie Knuckles Sports Pitch signifies progress, commitment, and hope for the future of our association and the wider football community”, he re-emphasized.

Mr. Brown emphasized that the project is expected to reignite interest among members of the Alpha Oldtimer Sports Association who have been absent due to various challenges, including the lack of a modern and functional sporting facility.

“With this project, I am confident that many of our members who have stayed away for several reasons will return,” Brown added.

“A proper facility brings people together, restores pride, and renews the passion for the game.”

The Willie Knuckles Sports Pitch is envisioned as more than just a playing field.

Football administrators and community leaders see it as a hub for social interaction, mentorship, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, particularly among young people and veteran players.

The project also aligns with broader efforts by the Liberia Football Association and local sports groups to improve infrastructure, preserve sporting heritage, and create inclusive spaces that foster unity and development through sports.

As construction begins, stakeholders remain optimistic that the facility will serve as a lasting legacy, honoring the contributions of past footballers while laying a solid foundation for the future of community sports in Liberia.
