The campus-based political party, Progressive Students Alliance (PROSA), has announced a nationwide march against rape and gender-based violence. The event, titled the “March for Dignity,” is scheduled to take place on August 27, 2025, and aims to raise awareness and demand systemic change in addressing sexual violence in Liberia.
Speaking to the media on Monday in Monrovia, PROSA Chairman Justin Jallabah described the march as “more than a protest.” He emphasized that it is a passionate endeavor to confront the alarming rate of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the country.
Jallabah cited disturbing statistics from the Liberia Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, revealing the gravity of the crisis. Between January and October 2024, the country recorded 2,759 rape cases, with Montserrado County alone accounting for 1,902 cases — 68.7% of the total.
These numbers translate to an average of 276 reported rape cases per month, and approximately 9 cases every single day.
He noted that the figures show that every day in Liberia, at least nine rape cases are reported,” he added. “For too long, survivors of sexual violence have lived in silence, shame, or have been silenced by a system that fails to protect them.”
PROSA is calling on students, civil society organizations, community leaders, and the general public to join the March for Dignity. The movement seeks to demand justice, amplify survivors’ voices, and push for stronger protections and accountability within Liberia’s justice and social systems.
