President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has extended warm congratulations to Friedrich Merz following his election as the new Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Merz was elected on May 6, 2025, succeeding Olaf Scholz after a closely watched political transition.
In a statement issued by Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Boakai described Merz’s election as a clear reflection of the trust and confidence placed in him by the German people amid a period of significant global challenges.
“Your assumption of this high office is a testament to the confidence and trust the German people have placed in your leadership at this critical moment in global affairs,” President Boakai stated.
He emphasized Germany’s influential role on the international stage, particularly in promoting democracy, economic cooperation, and multilateral partnerships. President Boakai expressed hope that Merz’s leadership will help restore strained transatlantic relations and address pressing global concerns such as migration and political fragmentation.
“In an era where discord over migration, politics, and other pressing issues has strained historically strong ties, your leadership offers a crucial opportunity to foster renewed dialogue and cooperation,” President Boakai said.
Highlighting the enduring friendship between Liberia and Germany, the Liberian leader reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. He expressed optimism that under Chancellor Merz, both nations could work more closely to advance common goals.
“Together, we can build a partnership that not only benefits our two nations but also contributes to a more stable and prosperous global community,” President Boakai added.
Germany is one of Liberia’s longstanding development partners, with cooperation spanning health, education, infrastructure, and governance reform. The new German leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on global partnerships, particularly in Africa.
