In an emotional address at the funeral of former President Samuel Doe, President Joseph Boakai called on Liberians to embrace reconciliation as a path to peace, stability, and national development.
The ceremony, held in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, was attended by government officials, family members, and citizens who gathered to pay their respects to the late leader, who was brutally executed during Liberia’s civil war.
In his remarks, President Boakai emphasized the need for the nation to move forward, stating that it is time for Liberians to pursue justice through the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court, particularly for those leaders who lost their lives during the conflict.
According to the President, confronting the past is essential to building a future rooted in peace and unity.
President Boakai’s speech resonated deeply with many in attendance, underscoring the ongoing struggle for justice in a country still healing from the scars of war.
In a symbolic gesture of respect and gratitude, Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely presented a live cow to President Boakai a traditional symbol of the highest honor in their local culture.
Senator Nimely said the gift was in recognition of President Boakai’s strong leadership and humility in remembering the former godfather of Grand Gedeh.
He also urged the President to ensure that all benefits and entitlements due to the late President Doe are officially acknowledged and provided to his family.
