In a moment that underscores the growing global footprint of Liberian professionals in international development and peacebuilding, Matthias Yeanay, Executive Director of InfoQuest Liberia, has graduated with a Master of Arts in International Peacebuilding, Development and Security Practice from Maynooth University, one of Europe’s fastest-rising academic institutions.

Yeanay earned an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1)—equivalent to Magna Cum Laude in the United States academic system placing him among a high-performing cohort in a competitive, interdisciplinary program designed to address global challenges such as conflict resolution, governance, and sustainable development.

A Growing Trend: African Scholars in Global Peacebuilding Education

Yeanay’s achievement reflects a broader trend.

According to data from UNESCO, international student mobility has increased by over 70% globally since 2000, with African students accounting for a steadily rising share.

Ireland, in particular, has positioned itself as a hub for development-focused education, hosting thousands of scholars annually through government-backed fellowships.

The Irish Fellowship Programme, under which Yeanay studied, is regarded as one of the most competitive scholarship schemes, selecting candidates through a rigorous merit-based process across developing countries.

The program is administered in partnership with the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) and supported by the Government of Ireland.

Institutional Excellence and Academic Rigor
Founded in 1795, Maynooth University has evolved into a modern research powerhouse, currently enrolling over 15,000 students and recognized for its strong emphasis on social sciences, policy, and international development.

“I step out from the storied halls of one of Europe’s distinguished institutions with a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment,” Yeanay said, reflecting on what he described as a “transformative academic journey.”

The program he completed integrates theory and practice, focusing on real-world applications in fragile and post-conflict states, an area particularly relevant to Liberia, a country still consolidating peace after two civil wars that ended in 2003.

Liberia’s Context: Why Peacebuilding Expertise Matters

Liberia’s development trajectory continues to be shaped by its history of conflict. According to the World Bank, nearly 50% of Liberia’s population lives below the poverty line, while governance, youth unemployment, and resource management remain key challenges.

Experts argue that trained professionals in peacebuilding and security practice are critical to sustaining democratic stability.

Yeanay’s academic focus spanning conflict management, natural resource governance, and environmental sustainability aligns with Liberia’s pressing national priorities.

From Nimba to the World Stage
Hailing from Zeplay, Nimba County, Yeanay’s story is emblematic of resilience and ambition.

His academic journey bridges rural Liberia and global policy platforms.

Over the years, he has built an impressive profile, including engagements at globally respected institutions such as Chatham House in London and the European Parliament in Brussels platforms that shape international discourse on governance and security.

His growing list of qualifications includes:
BA in Sociology

MA in International Peacebuilding, Development and Security Practice (Honours)

MA in Environmental Management (Candidate)

Specialized certifications in climate governance, elections management, and conflict resolution

He is also a fellow of international development initiatives supported by partners including DANIDA, Denmark’s development cooperation agency.

Personal Sacrifice, Public Purpose

Behind the academic accolades lies a deeply personal story.

Yeanay dedicated his achievement to his late mother, Victory Yeanay, crediting her discipline and early guidance as foundational to his success.

“The standards I impose upon myself are exacting,” he noted, acknowledging the intense personal drive that has defined his journey. “Yet today, I allow myself a moment of reflection and quiet pride.”

Institutional Leadership and Collective Support

Yeanay also paid tribute to his colleagues at InfoQuest Liberia, whose stewardship ensured continuity during his absence, as well as to his family including his father, Arthur N. Yeanay Jr., for their unwavering support.

A Symbol of Aspiration for a New Generation

As Liberia continues its efforts toward sustainable development and institutional reform, stories like Yeanay’s resonate far beyond academia.

They signal the emergence of a new cadre of globally trained professionals poised to influence policy, governance, and peacebuilding across Africa.

“This milestone is but a prelude,” Yeanay declared, emphasizing that his journey is far from complete.

Analysis: Brain Gain or Brain Drain?

While international education opens doors, it also raises a longstanding debate: will highly trained professionals return home to contribute locally, or remain abroad?

Recent studies by the African Development Bank suggest that “brain circulation” rather than brain drain is increasingly becoming the norm, with diaspora professionals contributing through policy advisory roles, investments, and knowledge transfer.

If Yeanay’s continued engagement with Liberia’s civil society sector is any indication, his trajectory may represent a model of global learning with local impact.

In an era defined by complex global challenges from climate change to political instability, Yeanay’s academic achievement is more than personal success.

It reflects a broader narrative of African excellence, resilience, and global integration.

From the classrooms of Maynooth University to the policy corridors of Europe, his journey stands as a powerful reminder: origins do not limit destiny they enrich it.
