The Liberian National Police (LNP) officially launched a three-day training program in Voinjama City aimed at equipping members of the Community Watch Forum with the skills necessary to enhance the security of their towns, villages, and communities.
The initiative, which began in the Zorzor District, attracted over 300 participants throughout the region, reflecting a strong commitment to community safety.
The event was graced by the presence of George Karlay Jr., assistant to the city mayor, who expressed profound gratitude to the participants for their dedication to serving their communities and the nation at large.
He welcomed them to City Hill Voinjama, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in ensuring security.
Representing County Superintendent J. Lavelah Massaquoi, the superintendent’s office assistant commended the LNP for their proactive engagement with citizens, highlighting the significance of inclusiveness in the security sector.
He urged all members to embrace voluntary service, which he described as a vital factor in upholding the rule of law.
Cllr. J. Luther Sumo, Lofa County Attorney and head of joint securities, reiterated the critical role of citizens in collaboration with security forces to protect the environment.
He encouraged all forum members to respect the law as part of the broader ARREST agenda set forth by President Joseph N. Boakai’s government.
During a press briefing, Assistant Commander of Police Tarnue N. Kokula and Deputy Francis Zima explained that the initiative was a personal strategy undertaken by the Lofa County Police Detachment.
The aim is to empower the Community Watch Forum to aid the police in addressing and mitigating crime within various communities across Lofa County.
They indicated that the LNP had sought support from county officials for the program, but the leadership of the Community Watch Forum opted to have the participants contribute to the training costs.
Each member is required to pay 1,000 Liberian dollars for an ID card, 850 Liberian dollars for a uniform, and 500 Liberian dollars for food.
As part of the vetting process, participants must be over 18 years old, free of any criminal record, citizens of Liberia, and recommended by town chiefs or elders.
Those undergoing training will also be prioritized for opportunities within the security sector, underscoring their role in safeguarding the nation.
The scope of the initiative is set to expand into the Kolahun and Foya districts, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of community policing in Lofa County.
Through these efforts, the LNP aims to foster a more secure environment for all citizens.
