The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) reached a historic milestone this week as its Midwest Chapter officially inaugurated a new corps of leaders in what organizers described as the first-ever chapter inauguration in the organization’s history, signaling a new chapter for Liberian diaspora journalism in North America.
The ceremony, attended by distinguished community leaders, professionals, government representatives, religious figures, business stakeholders, and supporters, underscored the growing influence of Liberian-led institutions across the United States and the increasing role of diaspora media in shaping civic discourse, accountability, and cultural identity.
For many attendees, the evening represented more than a ceremonial transfer of leadership, it symbolized the strengthening of professional journalism among Liberians abroad and renewed efforts to foster collaboration, mentorship, and credible storytelling within immigrant communities.
The newly inducted leadership, headed by President Cyrus Joel McGee, pledged to transform the Midwest Chapter into one of the most vibrant and respected branches within ALJA, emphasizing professionalism, inclusion, integrity, and service.
“This historic inauguration marks a significant milestone not only for our chapter but for ALJA as a whole,” McGee said during remarks delivered following the event. “We are humbled by the confidence placed in us and committed to building an organization defined by excellence, collaboration, and impact.”
Founded to connect and empower Liberian journalists living and working across the Americas, ALJA has grown into an important professional network supporting media practitioners, advocacy, and diaspora engagement.
The organization serves as a platform for journalists and communication professionals committed to strengthening ethical reporting and preserving the voices and experiences of Liberians abroad.
The inauguration of the Midwest Chapter is viewed as particularly significant because of the increasing concentration of Liberian immigrants across Midwestern states, including Minnesota, a region that hosts one of the largest Liberian diaspora populations in the United States.
According to U.S. migration estimates and diaspora community assessments, tens of thousands of Liberians reside across America, contributing to education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, media, and public service sectors.
Observers note that diaspora media organizations such as ALJA play a critical role in strengthening democratic discourse by informing immigrant communities, amplifying transnational concerns, and preserving cultural and historical narratives between Liberia and host countries.
President McGee outlined an ambitious vision for the chapter, promising to work closely with fellow officers and members to establish a vibrant institution capable of fostering professional development, stronger community engagement, and strategic partnerships.
“We are embarking on a new chapter built on unity, collaboration, growth, and service,” he said, adding that the future of the organization remains promising with sustained community support.

The national leadership of ALJA, headed by President Joey Kennedy, was recognized for its encouragement and organizational support, which members credited for helping to make the chapter’s historic launch possible.
A major highlight of the evening was an address delivered by Brooklyn Park Mayor Hollies Winston, whose keynote remarks emphasized leadership, diversity, public service, and civic responsibility.
Participants described the speech as both inspirational and timely, particularly for immigrant-led organizations seeking to expand community influence and social impact.
Business and faith leaders also played prominent roles during the occasion.
Molley Kamara of Waterside Corporation, popularly associated with the Waterside Market brand, served as Chief Launcher and received commendation for supporting the chapter’s vision and institutional development.
Religious blessings and moral encouragement were offered by Rev. Dr. Francis O.S. Tabla, who served as Chief Lifter during the ceremony.
Liberia’s diplomatic presence in the U.S. Midwest was also acknowledged, with Liberia’s Consul General accredited to Minnesota, Tracy Ashley Grigsby, and members of her team participating in the celebration, reflecting growing diplomatic engagement with diaspora institutions.
The event further blended professionalism with cultural celebration, featuring performances by entertainers AK Feelingman and David Mell, while comedian Grace Konneh added humor and excitement to the evening.
Official DJ Mathue Doe Gibson maintained a lively atmosphere throughout the program, and caterer Ruth Okotie and her team were applauded for hospitality and service.
Organizers extended gratitude to sponsors, volunteers, donors, families, and community members whose contributions helped bring the event to fruition.
Media analysts say organizations like ALJA continue to grow in importance as diaspora populations expand and digital communication increasingly connects overseas communities with developments in Liberia.
Across the globe, diaspora journalism has become an influential force in political awareness, economic networking, humanitarian engagement, and social accountability.
