The implementation of the European Union-funded “Light Up Greenville” project has reached another significant milestone with the arrival of single-phase and three-phase energy meters at the Greenville Warehouse.

The meters, which are essential components of the electricity distribution network, will support the future connection of households, businesses, and public institutions to the new power system currently being developed under the project.

Their arrival demonstrates continued progress toward expanding access to reliable and sustainable electricity services in Greenville City and surrounding communities.

The delivery forms part of the European Union’s broader support to Liberia’s energy sector through a €42 million programme aimed at improving electricity access in Greenville, Buchanan, and Barclayville.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Liberia to strengthen energy infrastructure and promote sustainable development across the country.

The newly received meters will play a critical role in facilitating accurate energy measurement and efficient customer management once electricity distribution operations commence.

Both single-phase and three-phase meters are designed to serve different categories of consumers, ensuring that residential customers, commercial establishments, and public facilities can be effectively connected to the network.

The Greenville electrification project is expected to transform the socio-economic landscape of the city by improving access to electricity, supporting business growth, enhancing public services, and creating opportunities for education, healthcare, and local economic development.

As construction and installation activities continue, the arrival of these meters underscores the commitment of all project stakeholders to delivering a modern and reliable electricity system for the people of Greenville.

The European Union remains steadfast in its support to the Government and people of Liberia in advancing universal access to energy, recognizing electricity as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards.

Greenville is expected to be powered from the solar pv field in Murryville this july 2026 while a complimentory 2mw hydro power will be provided from Saywoo Town, as construction is ongoing on the Sinoe River.

A GIS is near completion with monitoring team from the RREA working with technical team to ensure the project is completed and commissioned early July Greenville Set to Receive Electricity from Solar and Hydropower Sources in July 2026 Greenville, Sinoe County.

The European Union-supported “Light Up Greenville” project is entering its final phase, with Greenville City expected to begin receiving electricity from the newly constructed solar photovoltaic (PV) field in Murryville in July 2026.

The solar facility, located near Greenville, will serve as the primary source of electricity for the city, providing clean and renewable energy to households, businesses, and public institutions.

To further strengthen the reliability and sustainability of the power supply, a complementary 2-megawatt hydropower plant is being Constructed in Saywoo Town, where construction activities are ongoing along the Sinoe River.

The hydro is expected to start producing current early 2027.The combination of solar and hydropower generation is expected to provide a resilient energy mix capable of meeting the growing electricity needs of Greenville and supporting the city’s long-term development objectives.

A key component of the project, the newly constructed Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS) located in Greenville, is also nearing completion. The facility will play a critical role in managing and distributing electricity generated from the solar field and future hydropower installation.

Technical experts from the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), the Government of Liberia’s implementing agency for the project, are working closely with project engineers and contractors to ensure that all systems meet the required technical and safety standards ahead of commissioning.

Regular inspections and monitoring activities are being conducted by RREA’s technical team to verify the quality of construction works and facilitate the timely completion of the project.

These efforts are aimed at ensuring that the infrastructure is fully operational and ready for commissioning in early July 2026.

The Greenville electrification project forms part of the European Union’s €42 million investment in expanding access to sustainable electricity in Greenville, Buchanan, and Barclayville.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Liberia to improve energy access, stimulate economic growth, and enhance public service delivery in underserved communities.
