The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Belgium has welcomed Mrs. Saywhar Gbaa Nyantte as its new Minister Counselor for Press and Public Affairs, marking a new chapter in Liberia’s efforts to strengthen public diplomacy, strategic communications and international engagement from its diplomatic mission in Brussels.
Nyantte, who previously served as Assistant Minister for Public Affairs at Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has taken up the new assignment with a mandate that places communication, media relations and public diplomacy at the center of the Mission’s engagement with Belgium, the European Union, development partners, the diplomatic community and the broader international public.
The Embassy described her appointment as an important addition to its diplomatic team, expressing confidence that her experience, professionalism and background in public service will contribute to advancing Liberia’s national interests and strengthening the country’s international image.
Her new responsibilities come at a strategically important time for Liberia as the country continues to deepen relations with European governments and institutions, pursue development partnerships and promote its economic, political and social priorities internationally.
Brussels occupies a particularly significant position in Liberia’s external relations.
Belgium and Liberia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, while Brussels also serves as the principal institutional center of the European Union, bringing together key European diplomatic, development and policy institutions.
For Liberia, effective representation in Brussels therefore extends beyond bilateral relations with Belgium.
The Mission provides an important platform for engagement with European institutions, international organizations, development partners and diplomatic missions based in the Belgian capital.
The European Union remains one of Liberia’s major international partners in development cooperation, with engagement spanning governance, peace and security, infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, private-sector development and institutional strengthening.
Against that backdrop, the Press and Public Affairs portfolio has increasingly become an important component of modern diplomacy, allowing governments to communicate policy priorities, respond to international narratives, engage journalists and present their national development agenda to global audiences.
From Foreign Ministry to Diplomatic Mission
Before her Brussels appointment, Nyantte served as Assistant Minister for Public Affairs at Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she was involved in public communication and engagement surrounding the country’s foreign-policy activities.
Reflecting on her transition, Nyantte described the appointment as both an honor and an opportunity to continue serving Liberia in a new capacity.
“After a deeply rewarding chapter as Assistant Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, I am humbled and honored to begin a new assignment as Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the Liberian Mission in Brussels, Belgium,” she said.
She emphasized that the move represents more than a change in title or duty station, describing it as an opportunity to continue representing Liberia’s national interests and contributing to the country’s public diplomacy and international engagement.
Nyantte also expressed appreciation to the leadership, colleagues, partners, friends and members of the media with whom she worked during her tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to her, the experience provided valuable lessons and relationships that have helped prepare her for the responsibilities of her new diplomatic assignment.
At the Brussels Mission, Nyantte said she intends to strengthen Liberia’s engagement with journalists, the diplomatic community, development partners and the wider international community.
A major part of that agenda will be communicating Liberia’s national story with what she described as greater clarity and purpose.
Her assignment comes at a period when public diplomacy has become increasingly important to international relations.
Governments are no longer relying solely on traditional diplomatic channels; they are also using media, digital platforms, public engagements and strategic communications to explain policies, attract investment, promote national achievements and build international partnerships.
For Liberia, a country emerging from decades of civil conflict and continuing its long-term development and reconstruction efforts, international communication remains particularly significant.
Since the end of the civil war in 2003, Liberia has made substantial progress in rebuilding democratic institutions and strengthening relations with international partners.
The country has also continued to position itself as a stable democratic state in West Africa, while seeking greater investment, development assistance and international cooperation.
The Brussels Mission is expected to remain an important diplomatic channel as Liberia advances those objectives in Europe.
Strengthening Liberia-Belgium Relations
Liberia and Belgium share longstanding diplomatic and historical ties, with relations extending into Liberia’s broader engagement with Europe.
Belgium’s role as host to the European Union’s principal institutions also gives the Brussels Mission a wider diplomatic significance.
Liberia’s representatives have opportunities to engage not only Belgian authorities but also European policymakers, diplomats and institutions whose decisions can influence development cooperation, trade, investment, humanitarian assistance and international policy.
The appointment of a senior official specifically responsible for press and public affairs therefore comes as an opportunity to enhance the visibility of Liberia’s diplomatic activities and ensure that the country’s priorities are effectively communicated to international audiences.
The Embassy said Nyantte’s experience will be valuable in strengthening the Mission’s communication efforts and deepening Liberia’s relationships with Belgium, the European Union and other international partners.
As she begins the assignment, Nyantte said she is approaching the responsibility with gratitude for her previous role, humility about the new assignment and optimism about the opportunities ahead.
She reaffirmed her commitment to integrity, professionalism, purposeful communication and the protection and advancement of Liberia’s national interests.
“A new chapter begins but the mission remains the same: to serve Liberia with distinction, purpose, and dedication,” she said.
The Embassy has formally welcomed Nyantte to the Mission, expressing confidence that her appointment will contribute to stronger public diplomacy, more effective strategic communication and enhanced international engagement.
Her arrival in Brussels consequently represents not simply a personnel transition, but part of Liberia’s continuing effort to project its national priorities, strengthen diplomatic partnerships and communicate its development story to an increasingly interconnected international community.
