The Judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit Court in Maryland County, Nelson Togba has
officially resumed duties for the May Term of Court after fleeing the county
last year amid tensions surrounding a heated land dispute.
Judge Togba’s return has been met with relief and optimism by many residents, who
described him as a “no-nonsense judge” known for his integrity and unwavering
commitment to justice.
It can be recalled that on May 15, 2024, residents of Big Town Township, mainly
youth, staged a protest in the early morning hours by surrounding the homes of
Judge Togba and Harper City Mayor Abraham Jackson.
The protesters reportedly placed traditional enticements, a symbolic form of
protest, at both residences.
The demonstrators accused Mayor Jackson of illegally occupying and selling land
that rightfully belongs to the traditional people of Big Town.
Judge Togba was targeted for his declaratory judgment in favor of the mayor and
against the traditional claimants in the contested land case.
Out of concern for his safety, Judge Togba departed the county the same day,
prompting the abrupt closure of the court and leaving several legal proceedings
unresolved. With his return, the 4th Judicial Circuit Court has now officially
reopened, allowing the resumption of pending cases and court operations for the
May Term.
Many Marylanders have praised Judge Togba’s resilience in the face of threats and
commended his courage in returning to serve justice under challenging
circumstances.
