Concern Liberians have reechoed the compelling need to address prison conditions across various prison facilities across the country.
Overcrowding is now a cliche at various prison facilities, yet practical action geared towards addressing such remains farfetched, they said.
Even though water facility for the inmates are available as a result of the supply of water from Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, they also alleged poor dishes for the inmates, which continues to affect their health
” The inmates eat plain white rice, no good medical attention among others,” they maintained.
According to them, such a situation is troubling and needs urgent intervention.
They, at the same time, attributed the overcrowding at prison facilities to the alleged manner and form in which some police officers handle cases from the initial stage.
“The Police, the Court and the correction are critical to the criminal justice system, and they all need to work together,” they added.
However, the concerned citizens in conversation with our reporter alleged that some police officers don’t investigate cases well but normally seek their own interest.
“They are not doing proper investigation, but they are just sending so many people to court, the judges should not be blamed for the prison overcrowding rather, the police”, they alleged.
In the wake of the old age issue at Liberia’s prison facilities, the need to address the root cause is significant to Liberia’s Judiciary system.
There have also been repeated calls to reform Liberia’s prison, “this is the time for such intervention,” they noted.
” The rule of law is essential to improving the Country’s governance process as such, key legal and Judicial indicators are necessary to moving the Country forward”, they re-emphasized.
