Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. arrived in Conakry on Saturday to represent the Government and people of Liberia at the presidential inauguration of Guinea’s President-Elect, General Mamady Doumbouya, underscoring the enduring diplomatic, economic, and security ties between the two West African neighbors.
President Boakai is leading a high-level Liberian delegation to the historic ceremony, an event viewed as a defining moment in Guinea’s evolving political trajectory and a symbol of regional solidarity within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a bloc of more than 400 million people.
Upon arrival at the Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport, President Boakai received a warm and formal welcome from senior Guinean officials, led by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, alongside Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ismaël Nabé.
Members of the Liberian community residing in Guinea, headed by their President, Kollie Bobo, were also present, highlighting the strong people-to-people bonds between the two countries.
The reception reflected the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties linking Liberia and Guinea , countries that share a common border stretching over 500 kilometers and decades of cooperation in regional peacebuilding, especially during the Mano River Union conflict era, when Guinea played a critical role in hosting refugees and supporting regional stability.
A History of Cooperation and Regional Stability
Liberia and Guinea have long maintained strategic diplomatic relations, collaborating closely on cross-border security, trade facilitation, and infrastructure connectivity.
Cross-border commerce and migration remain central to both economies, particularly in agriculture and informal trade, which supports thousands of livelihoods along the frontier.
Guinea is also a key economic partner in the sub-region, endowed with some of the world’s largest bauxite reserves, while Liberia continues to expand its role as a growing exporter of rubber, iron ore, and agricultural products.
Together, the two nations play an important role in advancing regional economic integration under ECOWAS frameworks.
Bilateral Talks and Shared Priorities
During his stay in Conakry, President Boakai is scheduled to participate in the official inauguration program and hold bilateral talks with President Doumbouya.
Discussions are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, border security, infrastructure development, energy, and people-to-people exchanges, as well as coordinated efforts to address shared regional challenges.
President Boakai conveyed his appreciation to President Doumbouya and the Government of Guinea for the invitation and warm hospitality, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across the wider West African sub-region.
The visit highlights Liberia’s continued engagement in regional diplomacy and its support for peaceful political transitions, reinforcing its role as a constructive partner in West Africa’s evolving political and economic landscape.
