A political support group representing Liberia’s Electoral District #11 has issued a strong rebuttal to allegations leveled against Speaker Koon following recent remarks made on a popular talk show, describing the claims as unfounded and rooted in unresolved family disputes rather than public misconduct.
In a statement, the Friends of Speaker Koon, a civic and political advocacy group based in District #11, addressed comments made by Madam Cecelia Kpor during her appearance on the Spoon Talk Show.
The group confirmed that Madam Kpor has family ties to the Speaker but firmly rejected her allegations, arguing that they stem from longstanding internal family disagreements that have been misrepresented in the public arena.
“These allegations do not reflect the character, values, or public record of Speaker Koon,” the group’s Chairman J. Laveli Tarpeh said, adding that the matter is fundamentally private and familial in nature.
Private Dispute, Public Spotlight
According to the group’s statement, the Speaker’s family regrets that personal disagreements were aired publicly, warning that such exposure risks misleading the public and undermining confidence in democratic institutions.
The group emphasized that no formal complaints or substantiated evidence have been presented to support the claims made on the program.
Political analysts note that Liberia’s increasingly vibrant media space marked by the rise of talk shows and digital platforms has expanded public discourse but has also blurred the line between private disputes and matters of public accountability.
Liberia currently has more than 50 registered radio stations nationwide, many of which host political commentary programs with large audiences.
Track Record in Public Office
The Friends of Speaker Koon highlighted the Speaker’s legislative record, pointing to his continued advocacy for transparency, accountability, and constituency development.
As a member of the National Legislature, Speaker Koon represents District #11, a constituency whose population reflects the broader national challenges of unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and access to social services.
Liberia’s Legislature plays a central role in national governance, overseeing a national budget that has exceeded US$800 million in recent fiscal years, alongside critical reforms in public finance management, decentralization, and social sector investment.
Supporters argue that Speaker Koon’s focus has remained squarely on legislative duties and constituency service.
“His record speaks for itself,” the statement read. “He remains fully committed to serving the people of District #11 and contributing meaningfully to national development.”
Call for Restraint and Due Process
The group urged the public and media institutions to exercise restraint, cautioning against speculation and premature judgment.
They stressed the importance of allowing families to resolve internal disputes without political or public distortion.
On behalf of the Speaker, the group issued an apology for any distress caused by the public controversy and reassured both the National Legislature and the public that the issue is being addressed internally and responsibly.
An official statement from the Koon Family, outlining steps toward resolving the matter, is expected to be released in the coming days.
As Liberia continues to strengthen democratic norms and institutional credibility, civil society voices have increasingly called for responsible public discourse especially where personal matters intersect with public office.
For now, the Friends of Speaker Koon say their focus remains unchanged: ensuring effective representation for District #11 and supporting governance efforts aimed at national stability and development.
“We are confident that the truth will prevail,” the group concluded, “and that Speaker Koon will continue to serve with renewed commitment and integrity.”
