Representative Bernard Blue Benson Jr. of Montserrado County District #17 has welcomed the appointment of top officials to the newly formed Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA), calling it a “strong signal” of the government’s commitment to revitalizing the country’s tourism sector.
President Joseph N. Boakai recently named the Director General and Deputy Director General of the LNTA following the enactment of the Liberia National Tourism Authority Act of 2024, a legislative initiative championed by Rep. Benson and unanimously passed by the House of Representatives.
“The appointment of the Director General and Deputy is a strong signal that the government is serious about transforming tourism into a vital pillar of our economy,” said Rep. Benson in a statement.
“I urge the new LNTA management to work diligently for the betterment of Liberia and to showcase our rich culture, history, and natural beauty to the rest of the world”, he added.
The LNTA replaces the former Departments of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and amends Title 30 of the Liberian Code of Laws Revised (Public Authorities Law).
The new agency will operate as an autonomous body tasked with promoting Liberia as a global tourism destination, attracting private sector investment, regulating tourism standards, and ensuring sustainable and culturally respectful practices.
Rep. Benson emphasized the immense untapped potential of Liberia’s tourism industry, citing the country’s natural assets and unique heritage.
“Liberia is best suited to dominate the tourism sector, thanks to its diverse cultural heritage, pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and historic sites,” he said. “This belief is what inspired me to submit the bill and push for its passage.”
He added that the LNTA could serve as a catalyst for national development, helping to create jobs, preserve Liberia’s cultural identity, and stimulate economic growth.
Benson also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the new leadership and working with all stakeholders to position Liberia as a premier tourist destination in Africa and beyond.
