A prominent Liberian residing in the United States has praised the leadership of Sekou Dukuly, describing the Managing Director of the National Port Authority as a visionary administrator whose stewardship is helping to reposition Liberia’s maritime gateway and strengthen national pride beyond the country’s borders.

Wynfred Russell, a Liberian based in the U.S. state of Minnesota, commended Mr. Dukuly for what he termed “real transformation” at the National Port Authority (NPA), emphasizing that the institution plays a central role in Liberia’s economic development and international trade.

The Port of Monrovia, managed by the NPA, handles the overwhelming majority of Liberia’s commercial imports and exports, making it one of the country’s most strategic economic assets.

Liberia’s maritime and port sectors remain critical contributors to national revenue generation, trade facilitation, and regional commerce in West Africa.

Russell noted that under Dukuly’s leadership, the NPA has continued efforts aimed at modernizing port operations, improving efficiency, enhancing infrastructure, and strengthening institutional credibility.

Analysts have increasingly pointed to improved port management as essential to reducing trade bottlenecks and boosting investor confidence in Liberia’s economy.

Beyond the port sector, Russell also appealed to the NPA leadership to support a historic sporting and cultural initiative involving Liberia’s national football team popularly known as the Lone Star.

According to him, Liberia’s senior national team is scheduled to face Minnesota United FC on July 26 at Allianz Field as part of Liberia’s Independence Day celebrations.

Russell described the encounter as a landmark moment for Liberians living in the diaspora, noting that it would mark the first time in more than two decades that Liberia’s national football team will play on United States soil.

“This historic match is more than just a game; it’s a powerful bridge between our
homeland and the diaspora,” Russell said.

“For many Liberians in America, especially those in Minnesota, this is an emotional and unifying moment.”

Minnesota is home to one of the largest Liberian communities in the United States.

Thousands of Liberians migrated to the U.S. during and after Liberia’s civil conflicts between 1989 and 2003, with Minnesota emerging as a major hub for the West African nation’s diaspora population.

Russell emphasized that Mr. Dukuly’s willingness to support the initiative demonstrates a broader commitment to youth empowerment, sports diplomacy, and national unity.

“He has shown genuine dedication to Liberian athletes and to the spirit of Liberians around the world,” Russell stated.

“We are deeply grateful to the NPA for helping to bring this dream to reality for thousands of Liberians here in Minnesota.”

Sports observers say international exhibition matches involving African national teams and diaspora communities often serve as platforms for cultural exchange, tourism promotion, and strengthening economic and social ties between nations and their overseas citizens.

Liberia’s football history remains one of Africa’s most celebrated stories, particularly through the global legacy of George Weah, the only African player to have won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

Many Liberians believe events such as the upcoming Minnesota match can help revive international enthusiasm around the country’s football brand while reconnecting younger diaspora generations with their heritage.

The anticipated July 26 encounter is expected to draw large crowds from across the United States and Canada, turning Liberia’s Independence Day celebration into both a sporting spectacle and a celebration of national identity.
