Command Sergeant Major Joyce N. Akoi of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has achieved a historic milestone as the first female Senior Enlisted soldier to graduate from the prestigious United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA).

Her remarkable return to Liberia is celebrated with numerous accolades, highlighting her groundbreaking role in the nation’s military.

CSM Akoi’s military career spans over 19 years, during which she has garnered multiple prestigious awards while training in the United States.

Among her achievements are a Diploma from the USASMA, a Master of Science degree, the Presidential Medal Award from the United Services Organization (USO), and various certificates of honor reflecting her outstanding contributions to military education and operations.

Originally enlisting in the AFL on July 22, 2006, CSM Akoi has held several key positions, including Human Resource Specialist and Administrative Clerk at AFL Headquarters.

She currently serves as the Administrative Clerk to the Chief of Staff, where she plays a critical role in managing essential records and fostering effective communication within the AFL leadership.

Her extensive military education includes specialized training in Liberia, the U.S., Germany, and Sierra Leone, focusing on human resources, leadership, and personnel management.

CSM Akoi has also participated in international peacekeeping efforts, serving in United Nations missions in Mali (MINUSMA) and Sudan (UNISFA), where she showcased her expertise in finance and military observation.

In addition to her military accomplishments, CSM Akoi is academically distinguished, holding a Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Organizational Leadership from Excelsior University and a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from AME Zion University.

She is furthering her education by pursuing a PhD in Administrative & Leadership Science.

Her decorated military service includes numerous honors, such as the Soldier Medal, Forces Service Star, Good Conduct Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal, along with multiple United Nations Medals.

Notably, she is one of the few international military students to receive the USO’s Presidential Medal Award, underscoring her extraordinary dedication.

CSM Akoi’s notable achievements stand as a testament to her unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership, inspiring future generations of Liberian soldiers, particularly women aspiring to enter military service.

Her legacy paves the way for greater inclusivity and representation within the armed forces of Liberia.
