The Republic of Suriname has formally lauded the Royal initiatives spearheaded by His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, praising the monarch’s far-reaching vision for South-South cooperation and its growing impact across Africa, the Sahel, and beyond.

In a joint statement issued following high-level talks in Rabat, Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and International Cooperation, Melvin Bouva, expressed his country’s “deep gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his vision of South-South cooperation grounded in mutual respect, efficiency, solidarity, and pragmatism.”

The statement followed Bouva’s meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

A Vision Extending Beyond Africa

Suriname, a Caribbean nation with strong historical and cultural links to the Global South, underscored the broader international relevance of Morocco’s diplomatic and development initiatives.

Minister Bouva highlighted that the Royal Vision is not confined to Africa alone but offers a replicable cooperation model for developing regions, including the Caribbean, through concrete socio-economic projects, capacity-building, and trade connectivity.

He noted that Morocco’s approach prioritizes practical outcomes over rhetoric, focusing on infrastructure, human development, investment facilitation, and regional integration, key pillars for sustainable growth in emerging economies.

African Atlantic Initiative: A New Geostrategic Space

The Surinamese foreign minister also praised what he described as the “enlightened initiative” of King Mohammed VI within the framework of the African Atlantic States.

This initiative seeks to transform the African Atlantic seaboard home to more than 20 coastal nations and hundreds of millions of people into a coherent geostrategic space for cooperation, consultation, and shared prosperity.

By promoting maritime security, trade facilitation, energy cooperation, and sustainable ocean governance, Morocco’s Atlantic vision aims to unlock the economic potential of a region that already accounts for a significant share of Africa’s external trade but remains under-integrated.

Diplomats and analysts view the initiative as a strategic response to shifting global trade routes, growing South-South commerce, and Africa’s expanding role in Atlantic geopolitics.

Royal Initiative for the Sahel: Connecting Landlocked Nations

Suriname also commended the Royal Initiative for the Sahel, which seeks to provide landlocked Sahelian countries with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean through modern transport, logistics, and communication corridors.

The Sahel region stretching across West and Central Africa and home to more than 150 million people has long faced structural constraints due to limited access to global markets.

Morocco’s initiative aims to address these challenges by linking Sahel countries to Atlantic ports, reducing trade costs, boosting exports, and fostering economic resilience.

Observers note that improved connectivity could significantly enhance regional trade, stabilize supply chains, and support development in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions.

Morocco’s Growing Role in South-South Cooperation

Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has emerged as a key actor in South-South cooperation, particularly in Africa, where Moroccan investments span banking, telecommunications, agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

The Kingdom has signed hundreds of cooperation agreements with African and Global South partners over the past two decades.

Suriname’s endorsement adds to a growing list of international voices recognizing Morocco’s development-driven diplomacy, which emphasizes partnership, co-development, and long-term sustainability.

As global power dynamics continue to shift, Suriname’s statement reflects the increasing appeal of Morocco’s cooperative model one that seeks to bridge regions, connect markets, and advance shared development across Africa, the Atlantic world, and the Caribbean.
