A disturbing incident has rocked the close-knit community of Wayzohn City, leaving a man with a deep neck wound after an alleged assault linked to a suspected extramarital relationship.
The attack occurred around midnight on September 4, 2025, and has been classified as an aggravated assault under Liberia’s Revised Penal Code.
The victim, 36-year-old Jordu Sirleaf, recounted to authorities that he was simply visiting to inquire about Sarah’s daughter when he was unexpectedly attacked.
According to his police statement, the incident took place between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. at the home of the accused, Victor Yarkpawolo.
Sirleaf explained that he knocked on the door of Sarah, the wife of Yarkpawolo, and did not enter the residence.
“Sarah opened the door, but I just asked about her daughter from outside,” Sirleaf said. As he looked inside, he was suddenly blinded by a flashlight and struck on the neck with a cutlass, resulting in a serious wound that required stitches at a local clinic.
Yarkpawolo, the accused, told police that he returned from the sick bush on September 3 and was informed by his children of rumors suggesting his wife, Sarah, was involved in a relationship with Sirleaf.
Although Sarah denied the allegations, tensions escalated early on September 4. Yarkpawolo claimed that around 1:00 a.m., he saw Sirleaf at their window, shining a flashlight into their bedroom and using a stick to part the curtains.
Following a verbal confrontation, Sirleaf allegedly knocked on their door, calling out Sarah’s name.
Yarkpawolo stated that he told his wife to answer, while he hide nearby with a cutlass. “When my wife opened the door, Jordu entered and began assaulting her, even though she was only in her pajamas,” Yarkpawolo explained.
During the altercation, he reportedly showed his phone’s light on Sirleaf, and when Sirleaf attempted to flee, Yarkpawolo attacked, inflicting the neck wound as a way to defend his family and his honor.
Preliminary investigations by police at Compound #3 support key aspects of Yarkpawolo’s account, with the suspect admitting to the assault.
During questioning, he reportedly stated that he was provoked upon seeing Sirleaf “romancing his wife while she was unclothed” in their living room.
The police report quotes Yarkpawolo’s own words: “Seeing the victim in my house at 1:00 a.m. caused me to chop him so he would not deny what he did.”
Yarkpawolo faces charges of aggravated assault under Section 14.20 of Liberia’s Revised Penal Code, which criminalizes the deliberate infliction of serious bodily harm.
The case has been forwarded to the Magistrate Court at Compound 3 for trial, where Yarkpawolo will be expected to answer for his actions.
Meanwhile, Sirleaf, still receiving medical treatment, expressed gratitude for the police’s prompt response but also voiced concerns about community safety amid ongoing domestic tensions.
As the legal process unfolds, this incident highlights the dangers of suspicion and conflict within close communities.
Prosecutors are preparing to rigorously review all evidence, including witness testimonies and medical reports, to ensure justice is served.
