The Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) initiated a groundbreaking ceremony for a significant renewable energy project comprising a 4.0 MWp solar photovoltatic (PV) system combined with a 9.4 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Vavamai and Bakumai towns, located in the Voinjama District of Lofa County.
The government of Liberia, through the RREA, has launched a groundbreaking renewable energy initiative with financial backing from the World Bank as part of the Liberia Renewable Energy Access Project (LIRENAP) and the Access Project II (LESSAP II).
This ambitious project involves the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 4.0 MWp solar PV power plant integrated with a 9.4 MWh lithium-ion battery system. Additionally, it includes a 1.8 MW diesel power plant to create a hybrid mini-grid that will deliver modern, reliable, and sustainable electricity to thousands of residents in Voinjama, Foya, Kolahun, Massambolahun, Bolahun, and surrounding areas.
Solar Power PlantA 4.0 MWp photovoltaic PV array outfitted with string inverters offering a capacity of 3.0 MWac.
Battery Storage.A 9.4 MWh lithium-ion battery system with 1.5 MVA inverters, providing stability and addressing peak demand and outages.
Hybrid System Seamless synchronization with the 1.8 MW Kaiha 2 diesel plant to ensure reliable backup and parallel operations.
Distribution Network Interconnection to a new 33/0.4 kV network to extend electrical supply to remote communities.
Control and Safety System: SCADA-based monitoring mini-grid controller, including lightning protection, CCTV surveillance, and weather monitoring systems.
Civil Infrastructure Development of essential infrastructure including a guard house, warehouse, internal roads, fencing, and site development on over 12.35 hectares in Vavamai and Bakumai towns.
Francis Nymalin, Minister of Internal Affairs, assured attendees that by 2026 to 2027, tangible benefits from the project would quell any doubts or opposition.
He also donated 100,000 Liberian Dollars, along with jerseys and footballs for the youth of both towns, reinforcing his commitment as a minister dedicated to the welfare of the communities.
This landmark project is set to transform the energy landscape in Lofa County, ensuring that thousands have access to sustainable electricity while enhancing quality of life in the region.
