Liberia and Seychelles have formally established diplomatic relations, marking a significant step toward strengthening South–South cooperation and expanding Africa’s intra-continental partnerships.

The historic agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 39th Session of the African Union Assembly, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together leaders and senior diplomats from across the continent to advance shared political and economic priorities.

Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, welcomed the move as a milestone in Liberia’s expanding diplomatic outreach.

She expressed appreciation to the Government of Seychelles for its support of Liberia’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, and for its continued collaboration with Liberia in key multilateral forums.

“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to African solidarity and multilateral cooperation,” Nyanti said, noting that strengthened ties with island states and coastal economies open new avenues for economic diplomacy and global engagement.

Seychelles’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Barry Faure, described the establishment of relations as both historic and symbolic, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence.

He emphasized that the new diplomatic bond represents a forward-looking commitment to cooperation between two African nations with complementary strengths.

Both ministers agreed to deepen collaboration across a range of strategic sectors, including trade and investment, tourism development, education and professional training, and regular political consultations.

Officials indicated that future cooperation could also extend to maritime governance, climate resilience, and blue economy initiatives areas of growing importance to African states.

The agreement is widely viewed as a notable achievement under the foreign policy agenda of Joseph Nyuma Boakai, whose administration has prioritized forging new international partnerships while consolidating Liberia’s existing diplomatic relationships.

Analysts say the move underscores Monrovia’s intent to diversify its global alliances and enhance its voice within continental and international institutions.

As Africa continues to push for greater unity and economic integration, the Liberia–Seychelles diplomatic accord stands as another example of how bilateral engagement can reinforce the continent’s collective aspirations on the global stage.
