‎As part of activities marking its 50th anniversary, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian support by donating a wide range of essential items to vulnerable communities in Liberia.

‎The donation was organized through the Office of the Resident Representative of the President of ECOWAS in Liberia and was officially presented during a well-attended ceremony on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, in Monrovia.

‎The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including community leaders, local beneficiaries, civil society organizations, government officials, development partners, and members of the media.

‎Speaking at the event, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia, Josephine Nkrumah, emphasized the regional body’s enduring commitment to peace, human development, and social justice across West Africa.

‎“This donation is a symbol of ECOWAS’ solidarity with the people of Liberia, especially those who are most in need,” Madam Nkrumah stated.

‎She explained that ECOWAS has transitioned from being a “community of states” to a “community of people,” focusing on deepening its relationship with citizens and enhancing social cohesion across the region.

‎Madam Nkrumah also announced an expansion of ECOWAS’ social humanitarian assistance program, from which five counties in Liberia are expected to benefit.

She revealed that ECOWAS has committed one million dollars to this program to protect the lives of victims of natural disasters.

‎“Through our office, ECOWAS has empowered several vulnerable women and youth groups, and we remain committed to strengthening our humanitarian and developmental interventions,” she added.

‎She further noted that the 50th anniversary is not just a moment of celebration, but also a time for reflection and renewed dedication to inclusive development and community resilience.

‎“This golden jubilee reminds us of how far we’ve come as a region.

It also reaffirms our responsibility to continue working with and for the people of West Africa-ensuring that no community is left behind”, she added.

‎The assortment of donated supplies was carefully selected to meet the immediate needs of families; Items distributed included both food and non-food essentials:

‎Food Supplies: Bags of rice, beans, flour, spaghetti, vegetable oil, and cartons of sardines.

‎Children’s Items: School bags, clothing, and shoes

‎Household Goods: Televisions, iceboxes, and other vital household items.

‎These contributions aim to alleviate the burdens caused by economic challenges, particularly in underserved communities where access to basic necessities remains limited.

‎Beneficiaries at the ceremony expressed deep appreciation for the timely intervention.

Many community members noted that the support would provide much-needed relief.

‎Established in 1975, ECOWAS has played a central role in promoting peace, security, economic cooperation, and political stability among its 15 member states. Over the past five decades, the organization has been instrumental in conflict resolution, democratic transitions, and trade facilitation across West Africa.

‎As ECOWAS marks its golden jubilee in 2025, initiatives like the donation drive in Liberia highlight its people-centered approach. The regional body continues to prioritize social welfare and inclusive growth, recognizing that the strength of West Africa lies in the well-being of its most vulnerable populations.

‎The donation in Liberia is part of a broader series of events taking place across the subregion to commemorate 50 years of regional cooperation, integration, and shared progress.

‎With the 50th anniversary celebrations underway, ECOWAS is using this milestone to recommit itself to the values.
