The main opposition Coalition for Democratic Change has raised serious alarm over Liberia’s fragile peace and stability.
At a news conference, the party’s chairman Atty. Janga Kowo heavily condemned the recent demolition of its headquarters in Congo Town.
Atty. Kowo stressed that it is time for the ongoing situation to draw the attention of the international community and come in to make the necessary interventions for the betterment of the nation and its people.
“I urged the international community including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), African Union, United Nations, and the U.S. government not to ignore what we described as “ongoing alleged atrocities” under the Unity Party-led government, he noted.
“Don’t wait until our peace is shattered and our people are once again plunged into despair,” Kowo reemphasized.
Speaking at a news conference the CDC’s Chairman outlined series of situations ranging from alleged systematic political persecution, including the killing of unarmed protesters in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County in February 2024, the dismissal of trained officers from the Executive Protection Service (EPS), termination of civil servants and contractors, including 700 at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs in March 2024, allegedly for expressing criticism of the government and the dismissal of employees at the Monrovia City Corporation for political reasons among others as reasons that warrant the timely intervention of the international community.
Kowo at the same time described as politically motivated interference in the appointment of Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah Sr. as ECOWAS Resident Representative to Sierra Leone, calling it a violation of the Liberian Constitution.
According to Kowo, the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has orchestrated a campaign of political witch-hunting and targeted legal actions.
Moreover, he pointed at the June 26, 2024, arrest of Ambassador Kemayah, whose home was reportedly surrounded by armed police officers in what Kowo described as a “scaring and panicking manner.”
“This is a brazen act of political vendetta. The frivolous charges related to alleged mismanagement of Saudi-donated rice are baseless and politically motivated” he maintained.
He disclosed that the CDC will continue to resist what he termed as “tyrannical rule.”
“We will resist loudly, boldly, and peacefully. We will not bow. We will never surrender our country to dictatorship” he stated.
Kowo also join solidarity with students and faculty of the University of Liberia, criticizing the Boakai-Koung administration for the university’s prolonged closure in 2024 due to what he called “gross underfunding and incompetence.”
“The current regime is clearly far adrift from the realities facing the country,” Kowo added.
Addressing the recent demolition of the party’s national headquarters, Atty Kowo said the timing just before the National Elections Commission’s annual inspection of political party offices raises suspicions of a deliberate attempt to undermine the CDC’s legal standing.
He alleged that it is saddening to note that the judiciary has become apparently compromised stating that the court has become a vehicle for the government to abuse and violate the rule of law.
Kowo noted that the party’s legal appeals regarding the property were still pending before the Supreme Court at the time of the demolition, which took place on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.
“When the framers of the Liberian Constitution said an appeal shall be held inviolable, they meant to prevent arbitrary actions such as what was done ,” he said.
He intoned that the CDC can never recover the ‘Sycamore Tree’ a symbolic element of their headquarters which he said was maliciously destroyed by the government using the hands of the Civil Law Court, which is not the final arbiter of justice in Liberia.”
He reehoed that partners need not to remain silent while democratic rights are trampled.
