Liberia’s President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has disclosed that approximately 34,000
people are currently living with HIV in the country, underscoring the
urgent need for comprehensive care and support for those affected.
“Thirty-four thousand persons in this country are affected with HIV.
We believe they need attention, and that is a large burden. The people have
been very cooperative and committed,” President Boakai stated.
Speaking on Monday, May 19, 2025, during a cabinet meeting
at the Executive Mansion, President Boakai expressed deep concern over the
rising number of HIV cases in Liberia. He emphasized the importance of
strengthening healthcare systems and expanding support services for individuals
living with the virus.
“Our brothers and sisters living with HIV deserve proper care,
psychosocial support, and access to life-saving treatment. We must do more to
ensure they are not stigmatized or neglected,” the President added.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to collaborating with
international partners, healthcare institutions, and community-based
organizations to improve access to antiretroviral therapy, increase public
awareness, and enhance early testing and diagnosis nationwide.
President Boakai also highlighted the critical role of public education in
combating stigma and discrimination, which remain major
obstacles in Liberia’s HIV response.
His remarks come at a pivotal time as the country continues efforts to
rebuild its healthcare infrastructure after enduring numerous challenges,
including the outbreak of the Mpox virus.
The cabinet meeting also focused on broader public health and social welfare
issues, particularly improving access to basic healthcare services and
protecting vulnerable populations across Liberia.
