Liberian recording artist King Dennis has been crowned Artist of the Year at the just-ended Music Love Music Awards (MLMA), earning widespread praise for his originality, persistence, and commitment to the true essence of Hip-Co.
The young talent, who has steadily won the admiration of fans across the country, was celebrated not only for his artistic accomplishments but also for overcoming public criticism and bullying tied to his unique musical style.
A veteran Hip-Co artist, Jon Bricks reacting to King Dennis’ win, said the young star’s rise reflects the resilience and authenticity that define Liberia’s urban music culture.
“This is why I’m proud of him,” he said. “Many people bullied him for his authenticity. His style may have been new, but it represents the true spirit of Hip-Co in its simplest form, music that even the most illiterate person can understand. I love that.”
Bricks drew parallels between King Dennis’ challenges and the early struggles faced by pioneers of Hip-Co. “When we first started doing Hip-Co, people called us gronna boys and said we wouldn’t amount to anything because our music was from the streets,” he recalled.
“But look at God! Today many are respected and making a living from the same street music that was once mocked.”
Jon Bricks emphasized the importance of celebrating deserving young talents and nurturing the next generation of Hip-Co contributors. “I will always give flowers to those who deserve them,” he said.
“King Dennis and his team should not stop or change for anyone. Keeping their ABC-style music and engaging with fans will take them far.”
He also extended congratulations to all winners and nominees at this year’s MLMA, acknowledging their contributions to Liberia’s growing entertainment industry.
“10:30 Ownpa, I see you,” he added with a smile. “Old soldier never die, but da gossip!”
The MLMA continues to be one of Liberia’s leading music award platforms, spotlighting exceptional talent and celebrating the evolution of the country’s contemporary music scene.
